ARE YOU READY TO DIVE INTO THE RIVERS OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY?

THEY ARE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING THE MOUTHS/ESTUARY

The Cantabrian Sea:

  • Length: Short, because they have the mountains (origin) near.
  • Volume of water: Similar level of water during all the year.
  • Course: they Ibilgua: They descend by long slopes.

The Mediterranean Sea:

  • Next to the Pyrenees: They are not very long but they have long slopes. In spring, when it snows, they are very large. In summer, they have little water.
  • Near the plains: They are longer and have few slopes. In spring and autumn water levels are high. In summer there are droughts.

ORIA

It is the most important river in Gipuzkoa, due to its lenght and course. From the place where it is born, around Lizarrate, to the place where it flows in Orio, it is 82,65 km long. Its main tributaries are Agauntza, Amezketa, Araxes, Zelai, Urtsuaran, Asteasu and Leitzaran.  

IBAIZALBAL

It is the main river in Bizkaia. It rises near Durango and flows into Bilbao estuary. The origin of the river forms smaller rivers. Originally, this river is called Zumelegi, and it is formed by the small rivers of Elorrio and its surroundings. Now, it is known as the Ibaizabal river.

NERBIOI

It is a river located in the southwest of Bizkaia and the northwest of Araba. It is one of the tributaries of the Ibaizabal river. In total, it is 72 km long. 

UROLA

It is a river that crosses the centre of Gipuzkoa from south to north. It is 64,5 km long. Is has a narrow basin, especially at the origin of the river. The valley that it forms has three regions: Urola Garaia, Urola Erdia eta Urola Kosta.

ZADORRA

It is the main river of Araba. It rises in the Entzia mountain chain, in the city of Donemiliaga. It joins the Ebro between Miranda Ebro (Burgos) and Zanbrana (Araba) after crossing Agurain, Gazteiz, Iruña Oka, Argantzun eta Armiñon.


BIDASOA

It is a river of the Basque Country, and it crosses Nafarroa Garaia, Gipuzkoa eta Lapurdi. It rises in the Navarrese Pyrenees, in Erratzu, and flows into the Cantabrian Sea, through the Bay of Txingudi. Here, you can fish salmon and trout.

ARGA

It is a river of Nafarroa, which has the slope towards the Mediterranean. It is boen in the north of the Erro valley and flows into the Aragon river. It is 145 km long and it is totally situated in Nafarroa.


KADAGUA

This river rises in the province of Burgos, in the Mena Valley, and flows into the Ibaizabal, in Bizkaia. It is 70 km long and it crosses Balmaseda, Zalla, Gueñes and Alonsotegi. Then, it ends between Barakaldo and Bilbo.
